Shared Hosting Security Issues with your Website

Shared hosting is what most people sign up to when setting up a website. For economic reasons it makes sense as it is usually the cheapest option and it provides enough resources to get you started. But if a website on the shared server gets hacked then it could mean trouble for your website as well.

SHARED HOSTING RUNS MULTIPLE WEBSITES

A shared hosting or also known as Cloud Hosting server runs many websites by sharing the operating system, memory, processor cores and hard disk storage. There are no hard partitions between the websites.

If hackers are able to take control over a server, they can access and manipulate all information that is on it. This is something you need to be aware of and put preventative measures in place to guard against this.

SHARED IP ADDRESS

Websites on a shared server share one IP address so if your website is on a shared server with a hacked website, then you will be punished or risk facing being blacklisted, blocked or downgraded in the search engine rankings.

SHARED NETWORK ISSUES

There is sometimes hundreds, maybe thousands of websites on a shared server. The problem with is resources are limited between websites so restrictions are light. When restrictions are light, vulnerabilities occur when web, mail, FTP and database services security are lax and open ports are able to be exploited. Firewalls are there but not strict enough because of the volume of websites it serves.

WHAT HELPS

• Keeping your software updated at all times is critical in protecting you against attacks. (not nice to say but the hacker will move to an easier target) Take a look at our article on WordPress Website security

• Consider upgrading your package to a dedicated server if possible

• Install a firewall plugin like WordFence to block unwanted invaders

Limiting exposure is the best way to prevent attacks and problems.
